Shared sisters' room
We've been working on a few house projects now that the post-kitchen renovation energy has returned. Both of us were ready for a break from house projects for awhile after living and breathing a giant DIY kitchen renovation for 6 solid months, and even though there are a few things left to do in the kitchen, we have to wait for good weather to do those so we've started other projects. (Nursery refresh and basement plans both in the works!)
Since baby 3 is coming soon (soon! well, relatively soon) we pushed the girls into one room a few weeks ago, which I wrote a little bit about here, and that gave me the excuse to update/refresh what was in there.
Here's where the room started, real estate logo and all:
And here's somewhat what it looked like for the last year or two, with gradual changes coming and going, with the post I wrote about it back then:
Literal lol at that classy blanket-over-the-window situation we had going on back then. Anything to get kids to sleep, am I right?
So, the priorities for K and C sharing a room were: a bunk bed, a dresser big enough for both of their clothes to go into, and a new rug that fit our style.
The rug in the above picture got shunted to the nursery for now, and I sold the rug that was in the nursery (pictured in this post) because it was just too dark. I like playing rug roulette because it bugs David to no end and because rugs are just my favorite household item to buy. They can so drastically change a room and there are so many beautiful ones! I fell in love with this Safavieh Audrina Target rug and snagged it during one of their 30% off sales which come around about every 6 weeks (I think it was around $150 with my Redcard total?).
My favorite tip: you can almost always make back the money you spend on rugs by reselling on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist IF you bought said rug on sale (or at least 75% of the original cost as long as you don't beat them up too badly). Don't tell the lady I just sold our old living room rug to, but I actually made money on that sale because I bought it on huge sale and it's still listed on Target.com for almost twice as much so I listed it accordingly. Another big tip that's worked the last 3 times I've sold rugs is to show them how nice a rug can feel with a really good rug pad underneath. Since I usually have the one I'm selling rolled up, I make sure and have the potential buyer step on our living room rug which has our go-to rug pad (Amazon affiliate link there!) underneath and tell them where I got it so they can buy one, too. Rugs always always ALWAYS need rug pads, and the Gorilla one we buy from Amazon is amazing. It's so cushy, super nonslip, and very easy to cut-to-size. It will make any rug you have feel like plushy carpet.
Rug obsession digression done.
We picked out the Kura bunk bed from IKEA because it was 1) cheap and 2) the bottom bunk was close to the ground for Cora's transition to big girl bed sleeping. We also picked up an IKEA Hemnes dresser when we were there because it has a huge amount of drawers and fit the budget.
So, enough blabbing and onto the reveal!
It's pretty simple but for a quick update and something that needed to happen anyway, I'm pretty pleased! I still have some more things that may happen down the road -- replacing the Hemnes hardware, hanging up a vintage mirror, perhaps trying some removable wallpaper on the wall behind their bunk? -- but it's cute and functional and super cozy. Most importantly the girls love it so I have some happy (if indiscriminate) design customers.
I've listed all the links/sources I could remember at the end of this post, because I always like seeing that even with lowly mom bloggers because I'm curious where they shop! Spoiler alert: 90% of it is Target/IKEA, bought over a long range of time so not everything is still available.
We've started work on the basement (can lighting is job #1 and it's done minus patching!) and I've got a small nursery refresh in the works too, so hopefully a few other projects will get blogged before baby 3 gets here!

Cute room!! I tried to comment on your last post but I’m not sure if it went through? How do you like the bunk beds? I am debating between those and regular size. I’m afraid the bed on the bottom will always look messy because it’s on the floor. Thoughts? Also, do you feel like they will grow out of them sooner? So many questions!!
ReplyDeleteI really like the bunk beds so far! For the price they're hard to beat and I was worried about Cora falling out of a normal-height bed so I love the fact that her mattress is literally on the floor in this one. I don't find it to be any more difficult to keep the bed made than normal bunk beds (which are obviously just hard in comparison to regular beds haha). And I think they'll fit in them for a very long time since they're normal twin-sized mattresses! I have no problem wanting to take a nap in the bottom bunk with them, that's for sure. :)
DeleteIt's so light and airy and happy! I love it x 1,000,000! Strong work. :)
ReplyDeleteI should add, all your talk of a shared sisters room motivated me to put our boys together before baby arrives. We had one rough night and now they're roommate buds! It's awesome. Thanks for the encouragement!
Awww cuuuuute! Kids sharing a room was something I didn't expect to be as adorable as it is...but it really really is. Go you for getting motivated to do it before baby, you're a lot closer than I am! haha. :)
